BGO@ZnO Heterostructures for Ultrafast Scintillation Detectors / Babayevska, Nataliya (Mickiewicz U., Poznan) ; Jancelewicz, Mariusz (Mickiewicz U., Poznan) ; Iatsunskyi, Igor (Mickiewicz U., Poznan) ; Jarek, Marcin (Mickiewicz U., Poznan) ; Yakymenko, Ivan (Unlisted, PL) ; Padmanaban, Aravinthkumar (Unlisted, PL) ; Viahin, Oleh (Inst. Developing detectors to enhance the timing resolution of positron emission tomography scanners can help reduce radioactive doses absorbed by patients and improve spatial resolution in medical imaging. Time resolution may be enhanced in heterostructures comprising a heavy scintillator for attenuation of 511 keV γ-quanta, as well as a fast scintillator converting recoiled electrons from the heavy scintillator to prompt light photons. Development of MgB$_2$ Superconducting Magnet for Klystrons and Its Application / WATANABE, Hiroyuki (Unlisted, JP) ; TANAKA, Hideki (Unlisted, JP) ; ANDO, Ryuya (Unlisted, JP) ; YAMAMOTO, Akira (KEK, Tsukuba) ; LASHERAS, Nuria Catalan (CERN)
This paper discusses the development of replacing klystron magnets used in the Compact Linear Collider(CLIC)project at CERN with MgB 2 superconducting magnets. The study confirms that this replacement can reduce power consumption to less than one-seventh of that of the current normal conducting magnets, and to one-thirteenth when two units are connected in parallel as a pair klystron system. Inception of evaporative dryout for CO2 in milliscale pipe flows / Cantini, Giulio (Bath U. ; CERN) ; Hellenschmidt, Desiree (CERN) ; Pedano, Camila (CERN) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Sangan, Carl (Bath U.) ; Carnevale, Mauro (Bath U. ; CERN)
Carbon dioxide is a cost-effective, reliable and environmentally-friendly refrigerant with increasing employment in evaporator design. A clear understanding of the underlying flow physics, coupled with robust prediction of phase change through boiling, is necessary to enable widespread uptake of CO2 as a coolant. In scenarios such as nuclear reactors or thermal management in silicon detectors (e.g., Large Hadron Collider at CERN), employing saturated CO2 in milliscale pipes introduces further uncertainties in the design process, particularly regarding its behaviour at high vapour quality. Assessing the Usefulness of Assurance Cases: Experience With the Large Hadron Collider / Viger, Torin (U. Toronto (main)) ; Uythoven, Jan (CERN) ; Zerlauth, Markus (CERN) ; Felsberger, Lukas (CERN)
ABSTRACT Assurance cases (ACs) are structured arguments designed to show that a system is sufficiently reliable to function properly in its operational environment. They are mandated by safety standards and are largely used in industry to support risk management for systems; however, ACs often contain proprietary information and are not publicly available. [...]

Fault-Tolerant Control of a Multiphase Series Capacitor Buck Converter in a Master–Slave Configuration for Powering a Particle Accelerator Electromagnet / Ibarra, Edorta (Basque U., Bilbao) ; Arias, Antoni (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Martínez de Alegría, Iñigo (Basque U., Bilbao) ; Otero-Olavarrieta, Alberto (Rioja U.) ; Matallana, Asier (Basque U., Bilbao) ; de Mallac, Louis (CERN)
Multiphase DC/DC power converter architectures have recently been investigated for powering the superconducting electromagnets in the High-Luminosity (HL) upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, targeting high-performance figures and reliability. In terms of control, a master–slave voltage/current regulation configuration was previously proposed by the authors as an alternative to other well-known cascaded options. [...]
