Fault-Tolerant Control of a Multiphase Series Capacitor Buck Converter in a Master–Slave Configuration for Powering a Particle Accelerator Electromagnet
/ Ibarra, Edorta (Basque U., Bilbao) ; Arias, Antoni (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Martínez de Alegría, Iñigo (Basque U., Bilbao) ; Otero-Olavarrieta, Alberto (Rioja U.) ; Matallana, Asier (Basque U., Bilbao) ; de Mallac, Louis (CERN)
Multiphase DC/DC power converter architectures have recently been investigated for powering the superconducting electromagnets in the High-Luminosity (HL) upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, targeting high-performance figures and reliability. In terms of control, a master–slave voltage/current regulation configuration was previously proposed by the authors as an alternative to other well-known cascaded options. [...]

Particle adhesion assessment based on a diverted use of laser shock adhesion test (LASAT) to apply inertia force relying on dynamics of the sample macroscopic surface
/ Baudin, Lucie (CERN) ; Garion, Cedric (CERN) ; Chiggiatto, Paolo ; Delloro, Francesco (Paris, Ecole des Mines) ; Jeandin, Michel (Paris, Ecole des Mines) ; Thorel, Alain (Paris, Ecole des Mines) ; Boustie, Michel (CNRS, France)
Laser-assisted surface structuring was developed at CERN for the treatment of the inside wall of the vacuum system of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). 50-µm-deep grooves were created by material ablation while the laser scanned the surface. [...]

Operation of CERN’s major tests facility with upgraded cryogenic infrastructure for superconducting magnets, power links, inner triplets String and radio-frequency cavities for HL-LHC
/ Mauny, R (CERN) ; Barbe, T (CERN) ; Dupont, T (CERN) ; Ferrand, F (CERN) ; Gahier, V (CERN) ; Gery, J (CERN) ; Guillotin, N (CERN) ; Perin, A (CERN) ; Onufrena, A (CERN) ; Pirotte, O (CERN)
The largest cryogenic multipurpose test facility at CERN (SM18), recently significantly upgraded, provides helium refrigeration capacity for testing at nominal conditions, superconducting magnets, power links, radiofrequency (RF) cavities and the IT String (Inner Triplet) for the High Luminosity-Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) upgrade project, towards increased luminosity at interaction points 1 (ATLAS) and 5 (CMS) in the LHC accelerator. The SM18 cryogenics infrastructure and test benches have been progressively upgraded along the last 8 years to meet the technical requirements of the HL-LHC project. [...]

LHC cryogenic system adaptation and recovery after a major insulation vacuum breakage in a final focusing superconducting magnet in 2023
/ Bradu, B (CERN) ; Combe, M (CERN) ; Gahier, V (CERN) ; Herblin, L (CERN) ; Pirotte, O (CERN)
On 17th of July 2023, during the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) beam operation for physics Run 3, one of the low-beta superconducting quadrupole located on the left side of the LHC point 8 (ITL8) quenched following an electrical network disturbance. This quench unfortunately induced a crack in one of the magnet interconnection bellows, provoking a large leak between the cold mass cryogenic helium vessel maintained at 1.9 K and its insulation vacuum. [...]

Radiation environment at FCC-ee experimental insertion regions
/ Frasca, Alessandro (Liverpool U. ; CERN) ; Boscolo, Manuela (Frascati) ; Broggi, Giacomo (Frascati ; CERN ; U. Rome La Sapienza (main) ; INFN, Rome) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Andrea Ciarma (Frascati) ; Humann, Barbara (CERN) ; Kumar, Narender (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. The future circular electron-positron collider will provide collisions at four interaction points (IPs) along a 91-km ring, with beam energies ranging from 45.6 GeV (Z pole) to 182.5 GeV (tt¯ threshold). Several processes, induced by both the collisions at the IPs and the circulating beams, contribute to the radiation environment of the experimental insertion regions, exposing the detector, machine equipment, and electronics.
